Treepoints are part of the UN Climate Neutral Now Initiative!

Treepoints is proud to announce that it has officially received its badge from the UN Climate Neutral Now Initiative (UNCNN)

What is it exactly?

The UNCNN  is one of several initiatives launched by the UNFCCC secretariat to increase climate action by engaging non-Party stakeholders (sub-national governments, companies, organizations, individuals). It was launched in 2015 based on a mandate to promote the voluntary use of carbon market mechanisms recognized under the Convention.  

It has evolved to become a much wider tool for awareness-raising, capacity building, partnership development, promoting and facilitating the estimation of carbon footprints, the reduction of those footprints, and voluntary compensation (offsetting).  

The Climate Neutral Now Initiative encourages and supports organizations and other interested stakeholders to act now in order to achieve a climate neutral world by 2050 as enshrined in the Paris Agreement.  It is a tool to promote additional voluntary action on climate, and to provide recognition for it. 

An organization can become a participant by signing the Climate Neutral Now Pledge, following the three steps (Measure, Reduce, Contribute) and reporting on its actions and achievements annually. 

How did Treepoints do?

Treepoints completed their GHG Corporate Emissions inventory for 2021 and also used this as a base year for their GHG accounting moving forwards. The method used within the reporting was based on the GHG Protocol. The outcomes of this report were used to completed Treepoints’ first UNCNN report.

• Measure: Bronze

We scored Bronze for measuring our GHG emissions. To reach a higher level, the reporting company must have their emission measurements verified by a third party. As we offer this service ourselves we are confident in our own measurements to not need third party verification, which is incidentally also costly for a start up! 

• Reduce: Silver

Treepoints scored Silver for measuring emissions. To attain Gold reductions have to be successful year on year. As this is the first reporting year we have no reductions to show! We will be working throughout 2022 to make decisions that will hopefully mean that our emissions are reduced. 

• Offset: Gold

To achieve Gold the reporting company has to offset above their estimated emissions. We subscribe all of our employees to the Treepoints Business Subscription and therefore offset above the estimated business footprint.

How can we do better?

Obviously this is a great start but we want to be going for gold all over! Unfortunately, we will probably have to stick with bronze for ‘Measure’.  However, we can improve to gold with our reductions. Therefore, over the course of 2022 we will be aiming to reduce our emission intensity/employee by at least 5%. To do this we will first focus on not buying new tech equipment as this was a high source of emissions for 2021 and buying brand new tech is not necessary all of the time!
